From the oldest dance hall to one of the most popular artisan markets in the state, the Gruene Historic District offers visitors the opportunity to play for the day and so much more. Rooted in German influence Gruene (pronounced “green”) was established in the 1840s as a town but is currently within the city limits of New Braunfels. Gruene offers a charming small town feeling with historic buildings, a Texas Hill Country location and boasts two nearby scenic rivers. Its central location between Austin and San Antonio makes it the perfect destination to explore for the day or stay for a weekend anytime of the year. Here’s why.
Outdoor Water Adventures Abound
Situated along the Guadalupe River Gruene is known as an outdoor recreational playground for a multitude of water sports. People flock to this quaint little district to kayak, canoe, and paddle board on both the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers. But the draw for avid river rats and those looking for a new experience is the tubing. As rivals, these two rivers beckon for weekend visitors eager to grab a tube for the opportunity to relax in the welcoming waterways. Full and half-day raft and tubing rentals are available through Jerry’s Rentals. They offer a variety of excursions for all skill levels.
The Oldest Dance Hall in Texas is in Gruene
You’ll want to kick up your heels at Gruene Hall, a 146-year-old iconic dance hall that has earned the right to have its own loyal following. From the famous country music legends that have grace its stage to those that visit for the first time, Gruene Hall is a Lone Star State institution that shouldn’t be overlooked. Even today it prides itself on providing visitors top of the line musicians, foot-stomping music, and an ample two-stepping ready dance floor. As of this writing the hall has postponed performances until further notice.
You can Shop for One-of-a-Kind Crafts
At Old Gruene Market Days over 100 artisan vendors sell their wares on the third full weekend of each month February through November. And also on the first weekend of December. This unique emporium for crafted items and Texas foods also offers live music, free parking and no admission fee. Some of the more popular items include candles, ceramics, glass work, handcrafted wooden tables and chairs, photography, sculptures, and more. Market hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Gruene’s Historic District.
You Can Explore the World Down Under
Explore the natural beauty of the land down under at Natural Bridge Caverns where you’ll find adventure and fun around every bend. This family-friendly attraction has something for everyone including beautiful and rare natural rock formations. Formed by single drops of water and the slow passage of time, these caverns are worth the trip. There are five tours to choose from. However, the most popular is the Discovery Tour. On this extraordinary journey 180 feet below the earth’s surface you’ll view ancient formations still in the making such as flowstones, chandeliers and soda straws.
The Whitewater Amphitheater Has Top-rated Talent
From ZZ Top to Sheryl Crow and Willie Nelson, to name a few, Whitewater Amphitheater deep in the heart of New Braunfels is a top music venue destination in the Texas Hill Country. While some of the performances have been postponed due to covid-19, you can visit their website to view future performances. In addition to great music it’s this venue’s unique riverside location with large cypress trees that also draw in the crowds.
You Can Go to a Drive-in Movie
This blast from the past experience is still alive and well at the Stars and Stripes Drive-in Movie Theater. Two feature first-run movies for the price of one can’t be beat. And there’s plenty of fun to be had here. The Rockin’ Eats 50s Cafe sells everything from burgers, fries, and Frito pies to popcorn and funnel cakes too. Kids will love the playground and the experience of reliving something from a bygone era.
