And, that is because she orders product solely on what sells at her location. “As a manager I have a big say on what comes into the store,” says Matthews. With a fine arts degree from the University of Texas, Matthews expertly chooses just the right pieces for her diverse Austin customers. She keeps a folder of suggestions and ideas to help her with the process. In Austin, she doesn’t hold back. “Everything sells here,” she says.
Nadeau — furniture paradise with a global flair
This furniture paradise for any home decorator specializes in one-of-a-kind hand-made solid wood furniture imported from India and Indonesia. Matthews describes the furniture as “rustic with a lot of character that can fit into any style.” For example, a few of those styles include industrial, shabby chic, contemporary, mid-century, arts and crafts, Bohemian, and modern farmhouse.
Console tables, desks, dining room tables, bookcases, shelves, chests, sofa and coffee tables, chairs, and hutches fill the 8,000 square-feet Austin showroom location. And, there’s more. The store has another 8,000 square-feet of warehouse space. The large space is needed. “We get a lot of inventory but it is always turning over,” says Matthews. The budget-friendly prices help with that.
Matthews says her customers shop at Nadeau to seek smaller pieces for their new homes, second homes, Hill Country lake houses, beach houses, and contemporary condos. “We have something for everyone,” she said.
Nadeau’s recipe for success
According to Nadeau’s website their formula to provide budget-friendly one-of-a-kind furniture pieces has evolved. They keep prices low by shipping the furniture directly to their stores and not to distribution centers. Nadeau ensures one-of-a-kind pieces because the furniture they sell is not mass produced. In addition, the furniture does not require assembly. The other half of their success comes from their word-of-mouth and social media advertising. “Word-of-mouth advertising works for us,” said Matthews. “Most people that come into the store find us because of one of our previous customers.”
Spanning from the west coast to the east coast, the up and coming national retail chain has 32 stores nationwide. In addition to Austin, other Texas locations include Dallas, Houston and San Antonio.
