7 February Events for your Winter To-do list

February is a month full of heartfelt celebrations and holidays. Yes, love is definitely in the air during the second month of the year. But, so are all matters of the heart. Because in addition to Valentine’s Day it is also American Heart Month. However, the long list of celebrations doesn’t stop there. In February we also celebrate Black History, and the weather. Ok, it just doesn’t seem right not to acknowledge Groundhog Day. No matter what the groundhog predicts mild Central Texas winters make February a great time to get out. And, enjoy all the super events happening in the area. From making holiday crafts to touring new model homes to exploring caves, fun is definitely on the agenda for February. Here’s our list of spectacular ways to spend time with family and friends in February.

Celebrate Black History month Feb. 1 – Feb. 28

Austin Family has put together a great list of 10 family-oriented things to do honoring African American heritage in Austin. From special museum exhibits to art and culture to parades and fests, you’re sure to find an event the entire family will enjoy.

Make a Valentine’s Day Heart Candy Box

On Saturday, February 2 from 9 a.m. to noon kids will have a blast making a personalized wooden Heart Candy Box during the Cedar Park Home Depot’s DIY workshop. This three-hour workshop is a great way to spend the morning with your kids and best of all its free. Kids, with the guidance of a parent, receive hands-on instruction from an expert craftsman to create the perfect gift or treasured keepsake. No experience necessary but kids are required to get their hands dirty. They’ll also have the opportunity to customize their creation with paint and stickers. Registration is necessary to attend. Kids receive a certificate of achievement, an apron, and a commemorative pin, too. Yea!

Explore the world of dinosaurs during Jurassic Quest

Over 80 life-size dinosaurs, rides, activities, and much more comes to Austin’s Convention Center on February 8-10. Jurassic Quest, a three-day dinosaur extravaganza, displays an impressive collection of the true-to-life animals that once roamed the earth from the Cretaceous, Jurassic, and Triassic periods. You’ll experience what it feels like to be among living, breathing dinosaurs. After viewing the exhibit, don’t forget to dig for fossils or ride on the back of a 24ft. T-Rex. There’s also crafts, science stations, face painting, bounce houses, and new attractions for 2019. Check the event’s website for more information, hours of operation, and ticket costs.

Find your dream home at Travisso’s Love Your Home Tour

On February 9 and 10 head over to the master-planned community of Travisso for their Love Your Home Tour. The two-day event features tours of the community’s new model homes, food, music, and family fun! Join them on Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m. for a fancy Jazz Brunch featuring yummy southern fare such as buttermilk biscuits, chicken & waffles, and an assortment of mini quiches. Then, stay around to meet special guest Sean “Sticks” Larkin from 1-3:30 p.m. Larkin is host of the TV show PD Cam and analyst on A&E’s hit reality show Live PD. Can’t make it on Saturday? Then, join Travisso on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. for Everything’s Coming Up Roseʹ. Events include a jewelry-making workshop, Instagram photo ops, face painting, plus giveaways while supplies lasts. Events start at the model homes, 3937 Veneto Circle in Leander.

Eat chili for a good cause

Support Leander High School’s Air Force JROTC Booster Club during its 8th annual Chili Fest on February 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. This all-you-can-eat chili with all the fixings fundraiser also features face painting, door prizes, a silent auction, and music. Bring the family, and some friends, too. The club uses the proceeds from the event to cover expenses for leadership camps, uniforms, drill competitions, and educational field trips. The event takes place at the high school. Admission is $10.

Attend the Living Leander Community Expo

The Living Leander Community Expo is a great way to explore the businesses in the communities of Leander and Cedar Park. You can get in on all the action on February 22 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Premier Athletic Complex. This free event features food, entertainment, shopping, and over $1,000 in gift certificate giveaways. The event also features live music. Band of the Hills performs at 7 p.m. Shows, booths, a job fair, laser tag, games, and more.

Explore the world down under during the Austin Cave Festival

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center invites the public to explore the world of caves during its annual Austin Cave Festival. Join them on February 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This free, family-friendly all day event features guest speakers, tours of two caves, live music, hands-on exhibits, and a variety of science presentations. Meet cave scientists, try on cave gear, and learn about the animals that make caves their home.
