Here comes the sun the summer season has begun. And, that means there’s loads of fun to be had. Take advantage of the warm Texas sun and join Leander Parks and Recreation for one awesome summer of fun. There’s plenty on the agenda such as a family campout, a fishing derby, festivals, outdoor movies, and music. But, wait there’s so much more. The Leander Public Library is also planning a summer’s worth of adventure and imaginative events for all ages.
For some homegrown fun close to home check out these awesome Leander events. All events take place in one of Leander’s parks or in the library. So, explore, discover, and uncover these great treasures in your very own hometown. Now, let the adventure begin.
Leander Events in the Park
This summer the Leander’s Parks and Rec kicks-off the season with its first ever Family Fun Camp Out and Fishing Derby at Devin Lake. Enjoy the great outdoors on June 1-June 2, beginning at 5 p.m. Sing around the campfire, roast hotdogs, toast marshmallows, and have a blast. The $25 family fee includes dinner, lunch and breakfast. Bring your tent, lawn chairs, and fishing poles. Games, stories, and music too. After a relaxing evening, wake up refreshed and grab your fishing pole. The derby begins at 9 a.m. You can register here.
Fill your summer evenings by watching a movie in one of Leander Parks. This signature summer series is an awesome way to bring together family and friends. The Movies in the Park series is free. All movies are rated G for general audiences. Blankets, chairs, picnic baskets, and snacks welcome. There’s still four more movies left this summer. Join in on the fun June 22 when the Mason Homestead features Daddy’s Home 2. This comedy starring Mel Gibson, Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, and John Lithgow debuted during the 2017 Christmas season. Movies start at dusk. The Movies in the Park series runs through September 7.
Dive-In Movies lets you enjoy a film while you swim. Currently, as of this writing, this season’s schedule has not been posted. Stay tuned for this year’s list of family favorites. The Dive-In Movies series takes place at Robin Bledsoe Park.
Leander Festivals and Celebrations
Join the city of Leander in celebrating America’s birthday during this year’s Liberty Fest on Wednesday, July 4 from 4-10 p.m. This annual hometown festival features plenty of music, food, crafts, vendors, and children’s activities. A dynamic fireworks display ends the day’s festivities and salutes the birth of America.
Have a toe tapping, knee-slapping, hand-clapping time at Leander’s annual Bluegrass Festival, September 28-29, 6-10 p.m. Enjoy the acoustical sounds of fiddles, five string banjos, guitars, mandolins, harmonicas and resonator guitars. In addition to live bluegrass music, this 13th annual event features vendors, kids’ activities, and food. The free fest takes place next to the Mason Homestead, 1101 S. Bagdad Rd.
Leander Public Library Summer Reading Program and So Much More
Anytime is a great time to take advantage of all the happenings at Leander’s Public Library. It’s where learning is always fun. And, there’s a multitude of programs, classes, and events for both children and adults to keep busy.
After all, summer vacation doesn’t have to be a snore. Especially when the title of this year’s summer reading program is titled Libraries Rock. This year’s rock music theme lets kids and adults in four age group categories read for enjoyment and vie for prizes. The more you read the better your chances to win. Join the library on June 9, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for the official kick-off and picnic. Also joining in on the Saturday morning fun is Austin’s School of Rock. A week of fun-filled events follow the kick-off beginning Monday, June 11 and running through Friday, June 15. Workshops, talent shows, StudioSpace Tech Lab and crafts.
