With summer vacation just around the corner keeping kids and little ones busy this summer doesn’t have to be a challenge. After all, summer is about sunshine, carefree days, playing outside, and relaxing with friends. And, there’s no better place than the city of Leander’s park system. Leander Parks offer a wide range of outdoor physical activities and countless hours of inexpensive fun.
In addition, there are many health-related perks of “parking it.” Parks are a great outlet and encourage physical activity. For those that attend regularly the physical exercise can help battle chronic diseases and foster mental and spiritual health. Parks also add to the charm of our communities, provide open spaces, and are aesthetically pleasing to look at.
So, in lieu of spending large amounts of cash on movies, theme parks, and outdoor water parks, set a goal to visit all of Leander’s parks this summer. Pack a picnic lunch, plan a scavenger hunt for your kids, swim, or grab a pair of roller blades. Leander parks are filled with large open green spaces, picnic tables, skate parks, ball fields, and swimming pools. There’s also a whole lot more. So, explore, discover, and have a ball. Exploring Leander Parks
Benbrook Ranch Park and Disc Golf Course. This park encompasses 46.5 acres of outdoor recreational bliss. For baseball enthusiasts the park features three baseball fields—two little league fields, one adult field, and batting cages. Additional amenities include a pavilion, hiking and biking trails, a skate park, a disc golf course and a playscape. Both the pavilion and the 18-hole disc golf course are available for rent. Devine Lake Park. Fishing takes center stage at this 45.5 acre regional park. The park features lake fishing, non-motorized boating, large open recreational spaces, and wildlife viewing. Plan ahead and pack a picnic lunch then hit the park’s trail. In spring the park hosts the Devine Lake Kite Festival. Mark your calendar for next year. The event usually takes place in the month of March.
Northcreek Ranch Park. Small in size, this park features a playscape and pavilion. It’s the perfect size for an early morning breakfast get-together or lunch date with family or friends. Picnic tables are available.
Robin Bledsoe Park. Known as the park that has it all you can literally spend the day here doing multiple activities. However, the new lighted multi-purpose synthetic athletic fields are the draw here. The fields opened in February and are top-notch. The park also features a swimming pool and splash pad. The season begins Memorial Day weekend. The daily fees are minimal. Splash pad admission is free. Check the park’s website for hours of operation, season pass information, and swimming lessons. Other features include a lighted basketball court, an amphitheater, a pavilion, a walking trail, BBQ grills, and picnic areas. The park’s popular Dive-In Movie Night is also back this year. Veterans Park. This 3.3 acre park site houses a Veterans Wall of Honor and an amphitheater. The park was built to honor all members of the U.S. military. Leander Parks Coming in 2019
Because of the city’s rapid population growth in the last few years, Leander is planning for the future. Therefore the city’s Parks and Recreation Department is currently developing a Comprehensive Plan. As a roadmap for future park development the plan is projected to be completed by the end of 2018. In this case the plan is specifically for additional parks, recreational facilities and fields, park improvements, and green space.
This year, Leander began construction on Lakewood Park located at the intersection of Toll 183A and East Crystal Falls Parkway. Construction will be completed in phases. Phase one of the construction is projected to be completed at the beginning of 2019. The park’s primary features include a kayak launch, fishing pier and trails. Another park in the works for Leander is San Gabriel River Park. It will be located at the intersection of U.S. Hwy 183 and San Gabriel Parkway. The park’s construction begins in 2019 and will feature recreational fields for adult sports and girls’ softball.
Discovering Williamson County’s Regional Park in Leander
Southwest Williamson County Regional Park. Though located in Leander this park is managed by Williamson County. Recreational opportunities abound here. There’s soccer and softball fields, a football field, a track, tennis courts, basketball courts, hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, BBQ grills, and pavilions. You can also make a big splash at the park’s Quarry Splash Pad Park. The $2 daily entrance fee is easy on the budget. Picnic lunches encouraged. Then, finish your day off with a ride on the Cedar Rock Railroad miniature train. It leaves the station daily beginning at 10 a.m. except on Mondays when it is closed. For $2.75 you can take a leisurely ride through the park’s many nature areas.
