Hike, bird watch, discover wildlife
Vast, beautiful and just minutes from Travisso on 1431, Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge is a true natural gem. Operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the refuge’s primary purpose is to provide a safe haven for the Golden-cheeked Warbler and Black-capped Vireo. These two highly endangered migratory birds make their way to Texas from Mexico during the nesting season beginning in March. The refuge straddles the divide between the Colorado and Brazos watersheds. Which means hiking, bird and wildlife watching, and photography are the refuge’s main activities.
Seven miles of varying trails takes you through canyons and to a spectacular view of Lake Travis. Before you go, strap on your hiking boots and don’t forget to bring a bottle of water. The trails are rugged and do require appropriate attire. Admission into the refuge is free and so are the trails. Hike seven days a week from sunrise to sunset. To learn more about the habitats of the Golden-cheeked Warbler and Black-Capped Vireo visit the refuge’s headquarters. They’ll also be able to tell you where and when to view the birds. Its open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Bike, kayak, play bocce ball
At Brushy Creek Lake Park the outdoor activities are endless. The Cedar Park gem encompasses 90 acres of recreational bliss. The park’s 38-acre lake provides opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. A canoe launch is available as well as kayak rentals. The popular Brushy Creek trail is perfect for running, biking, and walking. Have a picnic under one of three pavilions. Then, get the family together for a friendly game of bocce ball. There are two available courts. Bring your own bocce set and enjoy. Or, play a game of volleyball. A playground, sand pit, and water playscape will have kids playing for hours. In spring the park’s fields become seas of bluebonnets and are very popular spots for family photographs. The park is free and open to the public daily from sunrise to 10 p.m.
Walk your dog, golf, fly a kite
In the master-planned community of Travisso you’ll find acres of open spaces. And, 10 miles of proposed trails for dog walking, running, biking, or just getting from one place to the next in the neighborhood. Wide open recreational fields are also available for friendly tag football games among neighbors. And, great places to fly your favorite kite in the spring time. Golf your game? No worries, you don’t have to go far. Enjoy a scenic round of golf with friends at Crystal Falls Golf Club via the cart path from Travisso. Water is everywhere and the focal point of some great adventures both in and out of the water. Check out the scenery as you fly above Lake Travis on the longest zipline in the state. The hike up the 20-story cliff is a bit challenging but well worth the gorgeous view. Fishing and visiting one of the many parks alongside Lake Travis’ shoreline are perfect activities for short visits and daytrips. But, if boating is your thing, there’s plenty of rental options available. To spend the day on the lake choose from a variety of options such as houseboats, party barges, pontoon boots, jet skis, wave runners, and sailboats.
