Charming and quaint
Boerne – Pronounced “Bernie” this quaint charming city nestled in the Texas Hill Country is very close to the two-hour driving mark. If you’re not driving keep your eyes open because the drive to Boerne is beautiful. With the Cibolo Creek flowing through the heart of this small German-influenced city, Boerne has a lot to offer vacationers. Settled over 150 years ago the well-preserved historic district has more than 140 stone structures offering a glimpse into the city’s past. Its present day persona offers of trendy boutiques, art galleries, and biergartens. Dining options abound. For a truly authentic dining experience try some German cuisine at Alpine Haus Restaurant. But, don’t hesitate to explore additional options. Outdoor activities like the Cibolo Nature Center and Farm, Cascade Caverns, and River Road Park provide hours of family fun. Destination resorts, historic hotels, bed and breakfasts, and campgrounds offer plenty of choices for overnight accommodations.
Comfort – There’s no denying that this small rural unincorporated Texas Hill Country community provides visitors with a soothing, relaxing atmosphere. Comfort is definitely off the beaten track and probably not on too many 10 top travel lists. But, that’s the charm of this unassuming hidden gem. Encompassing only 3.2 miles Comfort is serene, peaceful, and a perfect place to hang your hat for a few days or a week. From Austin the drive is shy of the two-hour mark. Wineries, antique shops, and over 100 historic buildings shape the community. Comfort is also home to Cypress Creek Inn, a 60-year-old diner and one of the community’s signature cafés. Down-home delicious crowd pleasing comfort food are menu mainstays. In addition, Comfort’s convenient location along the Guadalupe River is ideal for hunting, fishing, and camping.
For the bed and breakfast enthusiast
BlissWood Bed and Breakfast, Cat Spring – For a truly relaxing atmosphere head to BlissWood. This unique B & B is located on the Lehmann Legacy Ranch, a 500-acre working ranch two hours from Austin. Son Island, Seguin – Dubbed as a tropical paradise on their website, this little bit of heaven in Central Texas is an actual island. The little more than an hour’s drive from Austin makes it a very doable family getaway. Ok, if you haven’t heard of it that’s because it’s hidden 11 miles southeast of New Braunfels in Seguin on Lake Placid. Direct access is by a 100-foot wooden bridge. No worries, it’s drivable. Water activities are plentiful. In fact, there’s so much to do here, the kids won’t want to leave. Swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, hydro bikes, water sliding, and more. Hang out for the day under your very own lakeside Hawaiian cabana. They come complete with all the necessities like a picnic table, BBQ pit, and a boat dock. Reservations are necessary. Or, if you choose to stay a night or two you’ll have to choose their glamping option.
Highland Lakes – Did you know that there are six lakes that make up the Highland Lakes region? In alphabetical order they are Inks Lake, Lake Buchanan, Lake LBJ, Lake Marble Falls, and Lake Travis. And, they are all within a two hour drive, some even closer. Though most Austinites have heard of these lakes separately, together they provide a playground of year-round fun for the entire family. Water sports, fishing, boating, state parks, shopping, dining, kayaking, golf, disc golf, and so much more. Special events like the Blanco Lavender Festival, and the Stonewall Peach JAMboree.
