Fall is in the air, and that means football season is here! In Central Texas, this means it’s time to Hook ‘em Horns. What better way to enjoy the season than with Bevo at Texas football games.
Bevo is the Mascot for Texas football and is an authentic Texas Longhorn. He sits on the sideline for every home game, surrounded by his caretakers, the Silver Spurs. The current mascot is Bevo XV, a resident of Williamson County at his owner, John and Betty Baker’s farm, called Sunrise Ranch.
But fans can celebrate Texas football earlier at the university tailgate on Bevo Boulevard.
Here’s what to remember before you go, to have the best tailgate possible.
Texas Tailgate Essentials
Fan Gear: While you can rock up to a football game without any team apparel, it’s always a good idea to show some team spirit! Team gear is encouraged, but burnt orange is always a solid alternative if you do not have any. Need gear? Shop the Texas Team Shop and University Co-op.
Koozie: Although it is fall, Austin’s temperate weather means it is still hot for most of the football season. There’s nothing worse than cheering on the team going to take a sip of your beverage of choice, and it’s already hot! A koozie is essential to ensure every sip is as good as the last.
Sun Protection: The Texas sun is no joke; even in the fall, sunburn is still a risk even in the fall. Sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are highly recommended for any time you spend in the sun. When walking around campus in downtown Austin, sunshine reflects off all the buildings. With hats and sun protection, you can prevent sunburns and stay cool in the heat.
Team Spirit: Arguably, the most essential thing you need is spirit. Get ready to Hook ‘em Horns! And throw up your best ‘hand horns’ or ‘rock on’ sign as you attend Texas football games.
Bevo Boulevard & Other Texas Tailgate Locations
Bevo Boulevard continues to set the stage for Texas-sized pregame festivities! This official University of Texas tailgate experience combines family-friendly fun with a State Fair vibe, transforming San Jacinto Blvd. from 20th St. to the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center about three hours before kickoff. Fans can catch the exciting arrival of Bevo XV and the Longhorn team parade, grab happy hour food and drink deals from local food trucks, enjoy carnival games and rides, and rock out to live performances at the Longhorn City Limits stage. For fans 21 and older, the Still Austin Whiskey Music Lounge offers Still Austin cocktails, exclusive swag, and happy hour beer pricing.
Other fan-favorite tailgates include the Texas Exes members-only tailgate and the historic Scholz Garten Tailgarten, where fans can get into game-day spirit with a pre-game pint, German classics like Wienerschnitzel, and live music. REVELxp offers reserved tailgating on the LBJ Lawn to fans looking for a premium, no-hassle tailgate experience. REVELxp packages are available for groups of any size and include amenities like full food and beverage services, TV media packages, and parking permits. Spaces are limited, so fans can reach out to REVELxp to book their spot and enjoy an ultimate Longhorn tailgate experience.
DKR Texas Memorial Stadium
DKR–Texas Memorial Stadium, named after legendary coach Darrell K. Royal, who led the Longhorns to three national championships in his 20 years, is a must-visit for any college football fan. Known for its electric atmosphere, the stadium packs over 100,000 roaring fans, creating a sea of burnt orange and white. And an atmosphere that’s hard to find anywhere else. Home games are typically sold out, and each one is filled with unforgettable moments, from the booming “Texas Fight” chant to the thrilling Longhorn Band halftime show. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or new to college football, a game at DKR promises an unmatched blend of tradition, pride, and excitement!
It’s finally time to kick off! Before you go, take a second to plan out parking. While 100,000 fans inside the stadium is a fantastic experience, it does take a toll on local traffic. A parking plan will save you time and trouble getting to and from the stadium. Entering Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, ensure you have your tickets ready. If you want to bring a bag, plan ahead; stadium policy only permits one small non-clear clutch or purse; otherwise, you’ll have to bring a clear bag. You can learn more about the fan experience and stadium rules on the UT Athletics website.
