Tech Giant Apple Invests in Austin’s Future

On December 13 tech super giant Apple officially announced plans to build a new campus on 133 acres near its current north Austin location. The $1 billion investment is part of Apple’s plans to expand U.S. operations. With the announcement comes the opportunity for the city to reach new heights and establish worldwide status as a major tech hub. Additional cities reaping the benefits of Apple’s innovation over the next three years include Seattle, San Diego, and Culver City, Calif.

This is Apple’s third facility in Texas’ capital city that is known for its musical roots and ability to attract major tech companies and new entrepreneurs. Its current 1.1 million square-foot campus in north Austin houses a customer service center, a human resources department, and an online store. They also operate a smaller facility southwest of the city. Currently, both of Apple’s Austin locations total over 6,000 employees. Initially, Apple is projecting the new facility to house approximately 5,000 employees. With over 11,000 Apple employees in Austin, it will become the city’s largest private employer. However, Apple is forecasting that the new facility will have the capacity to accommodate 15,000 employees. Which translates into thousands of new jobs coming into the city. Apple plans to create new jobs in engineering, R&D, operations, finance, sales, and customer service.

More about Apple’s new Austin campus

Though the new campus is not expected to see its first building for three years, site preparations will begin in 2019. Apple officials confirmed that two-thirds of the campus’ site will be dedicated to office space and research and development. The company is also preserving 50 acres of open space. And, the new campus will also conform with Apple’s commitment to the environment. It will run on 100 percent renewable energy.

Why Austin continues to be a tech destination

According to a Fortune 500 article one reason Austin’s tech industry is flourishing is because of its workforce. And, a primary reason why Apple chose to expand their business in Austin. The city’s workforce, according to the company, has an abundance of tech workers with expertise in engineering and support. A 2018 report published by LinkedIn confirmed that Austin takes the top spot among U.S. cities attracting the most workers. And, the reason is because of the number of available jobs. The numbers are impressive. In July of this year hiring in Austin increased 14.3 % over the previous year. Compare that to the nation’s overall hiring increase of 4.6%. So, where are they coming from? Workers from Houston, San Francisco, and New York are leading the way.

But, there’s more. Though the musical vibes of the city can be quite addicting, there’s a multitude of economic reasons why people and companies are flocking to Austin. Low unemployment, rapid job growth and educational opportunities top the list. Affordability, quality of life, no state income tax, mild weather, and an eco-friendly state of mind are a few others.
