Leander ISD continues to provide superior educational opportunities for its PK-12 student population. This progressive school district serving the city of Leander and covering nearly 200 square miles, recently received top honors from Niche.com. According to the school ranking website, Leander ISD was ranked #1 in Williamson County for 2020. Their overall A+ rating was an accumulation of factors that included state test scores, college readiness, SAT/ACT scores and teacher quality. Other factors weighing in were public school district ratings, diversity and safety.
Despite Leander ISD’s rapid growth, it has managed to keep its head above water. And continues to remain one of the top-rated districts in the state. In part, because of the curriculum they offer their students including top-rated technological, career, and college readiness programs. But that’s not all that motivates the district to put its best foot forward. It’s also the active learning environment, student and teacher successes and community involvement that fuels the decision processes.
To prepare for the future Leander ISD has announced a list of projects, proposals, and building plans for 2020 and the decade.
Bell Schedules, Full-day Pre-K, Two-way Dual Language Kindergarten
- The district is considering adjusting the start and end times of the school day. A community input survey is available on the district’s website and will close on February 20. All community members are encouraged to voice their opinion. Specifically, the district is asking the community to share those factors they need to take under consideration during the decision process.
- With the approval of House Bill 3 by the Texas Legislature, the district is moving forward to meet its requirements. The bill, signed into law on June 11, includes a requirement for all Texas school districts to expand half-day prekindergarten to a full-day program for eligible 4-year-olds. Leander ISD recently announced that their full-day Pre-K program will begin in the 2020-21 school year. Registration will begin this April. - On Feb. 6 the district announced that applications for the Two-way Dual Language Kindergarten program were available through their website. To apply or to learn more about the program visit the Dual Language Program section of the English Language Learners page.
New Classes Starting in August
With an emphasis on science, technology, visual communications and career preparedness, Leander ISD is offering its students new classes. Beginning in August students can enroll in the following: Physics 1, Chamber Ensemble, Cybersecurity; Law, Safety, Corrections and Securities; Audio Visual Productions, Graphic Design and Illustration; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Architecture.
New Schools Construction Schedule
Leander ISD and city officials put their heads together on Feb. 11 to discuss how to handle Leander’s soaring population. During the meeting LISD reviewed the district’s plan for the construction of new elementary schools through 2027. The schools and their approximate dates of construction are listed below:
- Palermo Ridge, August 2021
- Bryson, August 2022
- Travisso, August 2023
- Glenn High School area, August 2024
- Brushy Creek (Cedar Park(, August 2025
- Northeast portion of the district, August 2026
- Northwest portion of the district, August 2027
Will the District Propose a School Bond in the Future?
Though it’s not certain, with forecasts predicting Leander ISD will add 1,000 students annually throughout the decade, it’s likely they’ll consider a school bond. The proposed bond, if the district chooses this option, will fund capital projects to keep up with the swelling enrollment.
