All hail to mom! Though paying homage to mom didn’t happen until 1914, Mother’s Day is a time-honored, cherished tradition that continues to live on. Now in its 106th year as a U.S. national holiday we celebrate it on the second Sunday in May.
Most often many of us spend the day doing something special with or for our moms. This year make Mother’s Day extra special by serving her a five-star brunch in the comfort of your home or outdoor patio. Whether you are going solo on this, or have a standby crew, you can prep a Mother’s Day celebration fit for a queen. We’ve gathered a few tips and recipes to help you pull together a fantastic Sunday morning brunch to show mom how much you love and appreciate her. This Mother’s Day roll out the red carpet and make mom queen for the day. Let the celebration begin.
Decide on the Menu
There are so many options here. Start by selecting a few of mom’s favorite breakfast foods. Savory egg-based breakfast casseroles, frittatas and quiches, paired with a petite side salad and fresh strawberries, or cut cantaloupe is both simple and utterly scrumptious. Add freshly baked muffins the kids can mix up themselves and you’re ready to go. From waffles to pancakes to breakfast sandwiches to desserts, the options are endless and so are the yummy side dishes that can round out the perfect menu. For those that like to sleep in you can even make the main entrée the night before. And be all ready to go in the morning.
Serve Mom’s Favorite Beverage
Freshly squeezed juices and thirst-quenching flavored ice teas are fantastic complements for any spring time brunch. For those with coffee drinking moms rest assured you don’t have to be a barista to brew a great cup of Joe at home. You’ll just need to learn a few tips from a seasoned pro. And arm yourself with some great coffee recipes. Fruit infused waters and mimosas are as pretty as they are refreshing.
Set a Pretty Table
The creative possibilities and inspiration are endless here. However, it’s best to start with what you currently have on hand. Mom’s favorite color or china pattern is a great place to start. A white tablecloth and white dishes as a backdrop are always elegant. From there you can layer with appetizer and salad plates in a pretty pastel or floral pattern. If you don’t have the real deal you can mix and match with beautiful paper products. Disposable napkins, placemats, plates, bowls and cutlery come in coordinating colors and a variety of shapes. For outside patio dining try melamine dinnerware. It comes in a variety of geometric and floral patterns, or super fun designs such as pink flamingos and palm trees.
Add the Little Details
Flowers in small bud vases are delicate, elegant and beautiful centerpieces. But there are other vessels that work just as well. Teapots and teacups displaying mom’s favorite blooms are creative and beautiful. Floating candles in a glass bowl with lush greenery is simple, gorgeous and another way to add another detail. You can also add a few balloons or paper decorations too.
Make A DIY Card
But you don’t have to stop there. There are a massive amount of craft ideas and DIY gifts kids can make for mom. And keep them busy for hours. From cards to photo frames to bookmarks and coffee mugs, to name a few, we’re sure these projects will have a special place in mom’s heart.
