March Events for the Entire Family

Little Shop of Horrors, Thursday-Sunday, March 5-8, times vary, at the Black Box Theater, Concordia University, Austin. This widely popular sci-fi smash hit musical about a devilish R&B singing plant with a secret has devoured the hearts of theater goers for years. The story begins when Seymour Krelborn, a floral assistant with a meek disposition, discovers a rare plant breed in the shop he works in. The plant’s unique singing abilities have Seymour intrigued. However, he soon discovers it has a mind of its own and an ulterior motive. Concordia University’s Theatre program presents this spring musical for the entire family. Tickets are $10 and available online.

Austin Water Lantern Festival, Saturday, Mar. 7, 4-10 p.m., Mueller Lake Park, Austin. This hands-on life-celebrating event inspires the human spirit and brings together thousands. For those that have never attended you’ll make your own lantern during the event then release it with hundreds of others. You’ll forever cherish the special moment as you witness the beauty of thousands of lanterns and light reflecting on the water. Food trucks, music and fun. ABC Zilker Park Kite Festival, Sunday, Mar. 29, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Zilker Park Nature Preserve, Austin. As a mainstay spring celebration in the city of Austin, this very popular festival brings out thousands. And why not, admission to attend is free. This year marks its 91st year, a milestone for one of the longest running festivals in the Austin area. Bring your own kite and enter the contest. Registration begins at 11 a.m. The contest starts at 1 p.m. You don’t need to bring a kite to attend. A kite workshop is available from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Free activities all afternoon long. More March Events

SXSW 2020 Music Festival, Friday, Mar. 13 to Sunday, Mar. 22; events, locations, and times vary. This 10-day conference is the granddaddy of everything interactive, film and music. Known world-wide, the conference brings together thousands and offers a multitude of daily events, book signings, films, music genres, workshops and much more. Tickets are required to attend the conference and can be pricey. However, for those that know how to get around the Austin area there are a variety of free events that cater to locals and fest-goers alike. SXSW 2020 Wellness Expo, Saturday Mar. 14-Sunday, March 15, 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Palmer Events Center, Austin. Fuel your mind, body and soul during this two-day wellness extravaganza filled with exhibitors, exhibits, and hundreds of ideas for how to live a healthy lifestyle. The event is free and has something for everyone. On the Fitness Stage experience a variety of classes such as yoga, boot camp, and strength training circuits taught by world-renowned instructors. St. Patrick’s Day Party, Saturday, Mar. 14, Noon-10 p.m. at Whitestone Brewery, Cedar Park. Jump-start your St. Patrick’s Day celebration on Saturday with special release beers, music, and Irish food by Van’s Damn Tasty Food Truck. Live music from 7-10 p.m. by Scottish Thunder. March Events During Spring Break

For those staying close to home during spring break the Cedar Park Library is hosting a variety of free kid’s events during the week. They are open to the public. No registration required. They are:

  • Special movie presentation of Aladdin, Mar. 17, 2:30 p.m. Food and drinks in closed-lid containers allowed.
  • 2020 Spring Break Free LEGO Fun Day, Tuesday, 2-4 p.m., for ages 4 to 104. Hosted by the library’s ESTEAM Learning Labs this free everyone’s welcome event features everything LEGO. Movie making stations, LEGO Battle Tops, or navigate your robot through a maze. Better yet, invent your very own car from LEGO bricks then have fun racing it down a ramp. A ton of fun and memories to last a lifetime too.

11th Annual Sherwood Forest Faire, Friday, March 20, 10 a.m. to dusk, McDade, TX. The Medieval Renaissance Faire returns with all the magic and fanfare you would expect. Located on 25-acres of non-stopping fun, it features an artisan marketplace, entertainment, pubs, stages, and games. Daily performances, sword fight demos, jousting, juggling and more. It’s open on weekends from Feb. 29-Apr. 19 and on Friday, Mar. 20 during spring break. While there, don’t forget to keep your eye out for Robin Hood and his infamous band of merry men. Tickets for one day admission are available online or at the gate.
